Patience, self-reflection and craftsmanship are all important aspects of my studio work. They are traits I feel we are continuously losing, as technology becomes a larger part of our fast-paced lives. Getting through life as fast as possible seems more valuable than taking the time to appreciate the people and things around us. The slow, meticulous, and sensory approaches to making art are often the most pleasing to me.
I like to work in a deliberate manner paying particular attention to light and movement. The immediacy of color and light and their impact on movement is infectious. A successful portrait painting goes beyond capturing a likeness. Anyone with drawing ability can replicate features, forms, and values. Successful portraits allow the viewer to develop a familiarity with subjects, to capture their souls. It is the process of applying paint with a brush, creating a dynamic energy not found in a photograph that most appeals to me.
