Thanks for visiting my website.

My name is Justin Cecil. I am an artist and student residing in Western Kentucky, with a primary focus on painting, drawing, and printmaking.

My most recent painting series "Heron's of Kingfisher Lake" were an exploration of my favorite winged creature, the heron. I am fortunate enough to live in an area where there is an abundance of this beautiful animal. My intent was to representationally depict them in a deliberate manner paying particular attention to movement: something not so easy to showcase in a still photograph. It is for this reason that I choose to paint. The immediacy of color and light and their impact on movement in a still image with every brushstroke is infectious. My technique of late focuses on a deliberate approach to most of my brush strokes in the central figure and a more abstract, but certainly still representative approach to the background of the image. This has been the case in my drawing and printmaking as well. I’ve found that some of the most evocative works of art are those that read as realism from a short distance, but as you approach the image, you begin to see beautiful abstractions in the brush strokes. Making water look believable for instance, has less to do with capturing every ripple and more to do with suggested movement and light. My goal is to fully realize this approach.
